We are four dentists and our names are Stuart Campbell, Derek Marner, Ryan Stewart and Paddy Watson.
We connected via the shared pursuit of running very long and sometimes irrational distances.
Working as dentists for a combined total of over 50 years we have found dentistry to be a mostly sedentary occupation, often stressful and it’s fair to say - not a profession that regularly troubles the thoughts of the Olympic selection committee . In reality, dentistry is an occupation that makes you want to collapse into the sofa cushions at the end of a shift and hang out with some comfort food.
While this is very tempting, we have found that getting out and going running is a great way to combat the stresses of our professional lives. Running helps to lay a strong foundation for goals in our personal and professional lives and it’s quite good for you!
So, being health professionals we want to help encourage as many people - not just dentists - to take part in running for it’s positive effects on self-confidence, motivation and staying focussed.
With all the covid-related disruption to our lives, this aspect of Mental health is as important now as it has ever been. So, we have decided to run a seriously long way in support of SAMH (the Scottish Association of Mental Health).
On 30th September, we are going to attempt to run the length of Scotland.
That’s right...the length of Scotland.
Going from John O’Groats to Gretna Green via our own two feet.
A distance of 420 miles - yes, ok...it’s a bit shy of ‘The Proclaimers’ total ...but then again ...they walked it!
But...just to make this challenge even more irrational we aim to complete this ridiculous quest within 7-10 days. Beat that Proclaimers!
We would love you to join us on part of our journey...so we will have a live-feed so you can follow our progress and run along with us for a bit ...jog along with us for 1 mile, 10 miles or 100 ..if you want.
We also need your support - give generously to SAMH or please come and be part of our support crew - we will need all the help we can get!
